Let me see the truncated middle of the skill.REALITY and Đà Nẵng Film Forum invite everyone to a screening of Julian Schnabel's 2007 French/American film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric) is the editor of French Elle, a man with a fast car, three kids, and a complicated love life. At 43 he wakes up in a seaside hospital weeks after a massive stroke. His mind is fully intact, and his entire body is paralyzed except for his left eye. A speech therapist reads the alphabet aloud to him, letter by letter, and waits for him to blink. It is slow, maddening work, and Bauby has a lot to say about it inside his own head. Then, one blink at a time, he sets out to write a book, and his old life starts coming back to him in pieces.
Schnabel is a painter, and for the long opening stretch he and cinematographer Janusz Kamiński keep the camera behind Bauby's eye: smeared light, doctors leaning in too close, the lid sliding shut. Amalric spends much of the film as a voice, and it's a funny, vain, furious one, still eyeing the nurses. The film won Schnabel Best Director at Cannes.
